Greek · ho POY-men ho kal-OS
Ho Poimen ho Kalos
ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός
The Good Shepherd — the one who lays down His life for the sheep
Symbol: The shepherd's staff across the shoulders — carried sheep and cost bearing
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
John 10:11
Jesus named Himself Shepherd — echoing Psalm 23 and Ezekiel's promise that God Himself would shepherd His flock.
What the name means
The hireling runs at the wolf; the Good Shepherd stands between. The cross is the difference.
He calls His own sheep by name — you are not part of a herd, you are known.
Kalon means good and beautiful: His shepherding is both noble and lovely.
How to pray this name
- Pray as one carried: 'Good Shepherd, You know my name — lead me today.'
- Pray it for the scattered and the straying — He goes after the one.
Good Shepherd, You know me by name and laid down Your life for me. I trust Your leading today. In the Mighty Name of Jesus! Amen.
Declaration
Jesus is my Good Shepherd — I shall not want, and no one can snatch me from His hand.
