This is the personal name of God — the name so holy Israel would not pronounce it. It is not a title; it is a self-introduction from the fire.
What the name means
YHWH comes from the Hebrew verb 'to be.' God is not a being among beings; He is Being itself — uncaused, unending, dependent on nothing.
Every other name of God unfolds out of this one. Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah-Rapha, Jehovah-Shalom — each is YHWH showing you one more face of Himself in one more valley.
Because He is the I AM, He is never past tense. He is not who He was; He is who He IS — present with you in this hour, at this altar.
How to pray this name
- Begin prayer by naming Him before you name your need: 'You are the I AM.'
- Where you feel God is absent, pray the name into the room until presence outweighs panic.
Yahweh, the great I AM, You are before my problem and after it. I anchor my soul in the God who simply IS. In the Mighty Name of Jesus! Amen.
