Parakletos
παράκλητος
The Helper, Comforter, Advocate called alongside
Symbol: Tongues of fire — the Helper who came to stay
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever.”
John 14:16
The name of the Holy Spirit as Jesus gave it: One called alongside to help — counsel, comfort and strengthen.
What the name means
Parakletos is a courtroom word: the advocate who stands beside the accused and speaks for them.
Jesus said 'another' of the same kind — the Spirit's help is Jesus' help, continued and internalised.
He teaches, reminds, convicts, comforts and intercedes when we do not know what to pray.
How to pray this name
- Invite Him before you pray, and let Him lead the prayer.
- Pray it in grief and in decisions where you need counsel.
Holy Spirit, Parakletos, come alongside me. Teach me, comfort me and pray through me what I cannot say. In the Mighty Name of Jesus! Amen.
Declaration
The Helper lives in me — I am never left to face anything on my own strength.
