Hebrew · el ro-EE
El Roi
אֵל רֳאִי
The God who sees me
Symbol: The watching eye at the desert spring
“She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: 'You are El Roi — the God who sees me.'”
Genesis 16:13
The only name of God in Scripture given by a woman — and she was a mistreated, pregnant, runaway slave in a desert.
What the name means
Hagar was invisible to everyone with power over her, and God met her by name at a spring in the wilderness.
El Roi means both that He sees and that He looks after. Divine attention always turns into divine care.
The name is a promise to everyone overlooked: your story is being read by the One who counts.
How to pray this name
- Pray it when you feel unseen, unthanked or forgotten.
- Use it interceding for the marginalised and abused.
El Roi, You see me. In the wilderness where no one knows my name, You call me by it. In the Mighty Name of Jesus! Amen.
Declaration
I am seen by God — never overlooked, never forgotten, never alone in the wilderness.
