Hesed
“Steadfast love; covenant loyalty”
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his hesed — his steadfast love — endures forever.”
Psalm 136:1
Hesed is the word God chose to describe His own heart. It is love with stubbornness in it — mercy that outlasts failure, loyalty that outlasts distance, kindness that does not check first whether you deserve it.
What it means
Hesed is covenant love: love that has bound itself to you and therefore cannot leave. Where English says 'love' and hears a feeling, hesed speaks of a vow.
It appears over 240 times in the Old Testament — most often sung, not explained. It is the word behind 'His love endures forever,' the refrain Israel repeated for generations.
When the Psalmist says 'Your hesed is better than life,' he is saying: the vow God made to you is worth more than the breath you are using to say it.
Pray the word
Father, I receive Your hesed today — the love that vowed itself to me before I ever earned it.
Let this steadfast love follow me, surround me, and quiet every fear that says I am on my own.
Where I have doubted Your loyalty, heal the doubt. Where I have striven to be worthy of love, let me rest in the vow.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases toward me — His mercies meet me new this morning.
